Window closed for the Miami Heat

Miami Heat fans, I hope you have enjoyed this off season.  It will  be your last championship for years to come.  Time to jump on the Miami Dolphins wagon as they will win one long before you get another.

Ok, yes you still have Wade and Shaq.  Ok, we at least Wade.  Consider last season Shaq’s Hoorahh.  He is on a very steep down hill and you will not see the likes of him in Miami again.  I am a very big fan of the Shaq Daddy, but do not see hime performing in the future.

Enjoy your party and start watching football if you are looking for rings, that is the next place to find them in South Florida.  Or of course you can move to Orlando, as they will be the next Florida NBA city to get one.

Wie not ready for the PGA

I have no problems with Michelle Wie trying to make a name for her self by playing on the mens tour. I respect her for wanting to play against the best. But, until she has an actual chance to compete, she needs to stay on the Ladies tour and continue to hone her game and her competitiveness.

She would do much for her self and for the Golf by staying in the ladies tour and winning, possibly becoming dominant, than she gets by being an after thought on the mens tour with little chance to actually win.

I would think a few years of multiple win seasons would better prepare her for playing against the men, that the continual failures that she is currently experiencing. Can she really feel that playing in the mens PGA tour, where she has yet to make a cut, is good for her sponsors or herself. If she made a cut and finished 65th, is that any better.

Get back to the LPGA, win a few tournaments, win a major, build your skills and confidence, then come back and give the PGA tour a chance.

Safety restrictions on Athletes

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburg Steelers QB, said Wednesday night that he was told he was “seconds, maybe a minute away from dying” immediately after his motorcycle accident last month. He has just spoke out about not wearing a helmet when he rode as he felt more comfortable with out it and that he was very careful.

Kellen Winslow was injured in a motorcycle accident on May 1st, 2005. He was contractually obligated not to ride a motorcycle and he crashed when he was popping wheelies in a parking lot. His injuries were considered serious, but not life threatening. It was eventually determined that Winslow suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and was put on the Physically Unable-to-Perform (Non Football Injury) list for the 2005 season. Winslow also fought off a six-week staph infection that resulted from his knee injury.

There are other stories like this. What can teams do to prevent players from performing tasks that are potentially threatening to their career. Tasks that are usually not permitted per their contract with the team.

I believe that the union or the league should be able to suspend them for failure to follow the terms of their contract? Whether it is the starting QB or the last player on the depth chart.

The teams will not do anything that might prevent them from winning. If Big Ben is healthy enough to play for the team, he will play for the team whether he follows the rules of his contract or not. That is why I think the union and the league should require all players to live up to the rules and restrictions of their contract.

3 year window for Clevland

Filed under: NBA — Brandon at 11:02 am on Wednesday, July 12, 2006

With the announcement that Lebron “KING” James will sign a three year contract, with a 4th year player option, to continue to play for the Cavs, James has given the team a three year window to surround him with the pieces required to win and win big. Without a championship in the next three years, James will be moving on.

Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry said in a statement posted on Cavs.com: “This is a tremendous day for this organization and for Cleveland Cavaliers fans.

“The opportunity to continue our partnership with LeBron James for years to come is beyond measure.

“He has been everything we had hoped for as a basketball player, already we consider (him) the Most Valuable Player in the NBA, and he only will continue to flourish.

“He also has been an integral part of our team as a person and a leader, and those qualities are priceless. Those are the qualities you need to create a championship team.”

What Ferry should have said is that I better get moving and get LeBron the players to win or I am fired and James is gone.

So, what can Clevland GM Danny Ferry do to jump through the window and bring a NBA title to the Cavs. With the extension of LeBron James completed and the signing of Michigan State combo guard Shannon Brown, they are just a healthy Larry Hughes away from having a very dynamic threesome at the wing. Each of those three can be ball handlers as well as slashers and shooters. That can make them a very hard match up for many teams in the NBA.

So, what do they do at the front court. With Drew Gooden, currently and unrestricted free agent, they have a very athletic defensive minded PF, although he can be a little erratic. One night he is a 18 and 12 man, then may show up a night later with 4 points and 3 rebounds. But with Gooden being a free agent, is he worth the 50+ million he is going to be demanding? That is only up to Danny Ferry, but what is out there to replace him right now, especially with about 0 in cap space this year they do not have many other options.

At the C spot, Zydrunas Ilgauskas mans the middle. He had some health issues and is in the final year of his contract. At 31, and a free agent next year, this is likely his last year in Clevland. That will free up some cap space, but with the James extension and the possible resigning of Gooden, there may not be much except for a serviceable replacement.

So based on this, I think this might be the year for the Cavs. Either way though, I think James will move to a big market when his option year comes up. So Cavs, let’s hope that you win now, or your window will close.

In his three years with the Cavaliers, James has set several team and league records and last season he led the club into the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

He was third in the NBA in scoring last season, averaging 31.4 points per game, and for his career he is averaging 26.5 points, 6.6 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game.
